We finally departed Victoria on April 15th to start our exploration of Northern British Columbia. The trip is planned as a series of short day hops as traveling at night is potentially dangerous because of hidden logs and other floating debris.   0ur first stop was Todd Inlet, a quiet anchorage up a narrow inlet right next to Butchart Gardens. Previously we had been to the gardens in August and October but in the spring most of the flowers were tulips, tulips, and more tulips of all colors and p...

Hello 2015! We have been in Victoria since the second week of October 2014.  It is a beautiful city, full of pubs, restaurants, beautiful gardens, and lots of shops downtown near the inner harbor where we are moored.  The changing of the fall colors was dramatic in the local trees and the climbing vines on the front of the Empress Hotel.  Now the sky is usually cloudy and gray with rain on and off all the time.  The Canadians really know how to decorate for Christmas, which started the day afte...

On Saturday, Sept. 13 we moved to Hunter Bay on Lopez Island where we met up with 14 other boats most being chartered by yacht club friends from California Yacht Club to start a 2 wk cruise of the San Juan Islands, Gulf Islands of Canada, Victoria, and the city of Vancouver.  What a whirlwind, 12 different destinations, moving everyday except for spending 2 nights in Vancouver.  We probably docked more times in that 2 wks. than we had in the last 5 years!  It was a great overview but very rushed...

8-15 We left Port Angeles under overcast skies but no fog at 8:30am headed for Port Ludlow a quiet anchorage on the way to Seattle.  We rounded Point Wilson, known for whirlpools and heavy currents at full ebb(a 2.5kt current against us). you could see the current rips but because there was no wind we didn't have any steerage difficulties.  We saw our first group of Orcas in the distance.  There is sooo much boat traffic compared to other cruising grounds especially off Port Townsend.  If we had...

7-31-14 We finally left San Diego on July 24th after many false starts.  Our two month visit there was very enjoyable.  The downtown GasLamp district was fun to walk around and the July 4th firework display was breathtaking.  The gecko that came aboard in the La Cruz boat yard had grown to about 3 1/2 inches and was leaving recognizable poops so we caught and released him outside on the docks before we took off.  The weather window was good from Southern California to San Francisco.  The first ...

Voyager as the small boat on the right in San Diego We spent about 2 wks in the marina at San Jose Del Cabo while we waited for our good friend Bret Bihler who was going to crew for us on the hop from San Jose del Cabo to Ensenada.  The town is very tourist oriented and 'downtown' was full of jewelry and art shops.  There were many good restaurants and good local bus transportation too.  It was a beautiful place to spend a relaxing 2 wks.  Our trip to Ensenada was uneventful.  I caught a dorado...
